During the Wisconsin lumber boom, many of Marinette, Wisconsin’s lumber workers found work on old schooner-barges like the City of Grand Haven. By the 1920s, some of these ships had seen 50 years of hard labor on the Great Lakes. Although still useful, they were near the end of their days. The Commonwealth Cultural Resources Group, Inc., in Milwaukee, WI, and Tyco funded the educational sign.
This educational sign, funded by Tyco and the Commonwealth Cultural Resources Group, Inc., WI, explains how the ship, the City of Grand Haven, profited from and then was changed by the lumber industry’s growth on the Great Lakes. The Marinette County Historical Logging Museum, Wisconsin, houses models of the City of Grand Haven ship and the George Nelson tugboat, as well as an interpretive display describing early shipping activity
